A 13-year-old girl is fighting for her life after being shot in the neck by her mother during a domestic dispute in Prince George’s County, Maryland. The tragic incident unfolded on Monday evening at a home near the Seat Pleasant Police Department.
Authorities have arrested 32-year-old Talecka Brown, the girl’s mother, on charges of first-degree attempted murder following a quick investigation. Police were called to the residence on 69th Place after receiving a report of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found the young girl near the front door, suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck.
Initially, the girl told responding officers that her mother had instructed her to lie, claiming that someone else had shot her. However, police quickly uncovered evidence that contradicted this story.
Surveillance footage from the area captured the girl walking home from school, retrieving a trash can from the curb, and entering her home. The footage revealed that no one else entered or exited the residence between the time the girl went inside and the moment the gunshot was fired, which raised suspicions.
According to court documents, the girl later told investigators that she had been arguing with her mother before the altercation turned physical. As the situation escalated, the girl said she attempted to walk down the stairs, only to notice her mother holding a gun. Moments later, the firearm discharged, and the girl was struck, causing her to fall down the stairs.
Acting Police Chief of Seat Pleasant issued a heartfelt statement regarding the incident: “It is always tragic when we have acts of violence within our community, but it is heart-wrenching when the perpetrator is supposed to be your protector.”
Neighbors expressed shock and disbelief over the situation. Tina Niblack, a local resident who witnessed Brown’s arrest, voiced her concerns about the growing issue of domestic violence. “It’s disheartening that too much of this is happening today,” Niblack said. “Domestic violence in any form, even within your own home, is still domestic violence.”
The 13-year-old girl remains hospitalized and is currently recovering from her injuries. Although her condition has stabilized, she is expected to require further surgery in the coming days. Authorities conducted a search of the home and recovered a loaded black Glock handgun, which is believed to be the weapon used in the shooting.
Talecka Brown remains in custody and is scheduled to appear for a bond hearing tomorrow at 1:15 p.m. As the investigation continues, the community remains in shock over the senseless act of violence within the family. This incident highlights the ongoing issue of domestic violence, even within the most trusted relationships, and has left many in the local community grappling with the emotional aftermath of the event.
