Meghan Markle’s former bodyguard, Steve Davies, has come forward to defend the Duchess of Sussex against allegations of bullying, describing her as a kind and compassionate person. In an interview, Steve, who worked closely with Meghan when she first joined the Royal Family, dismissed claims that she mistreated staff, insisting that these accusations are far from the truth.
“She gets a bad rap for being a not very good person to work with, that she was this evil person in the Royal Family,” Steve told In Touch Magazine. He added that Meghan was always engaged with people from all walks of life, including charities, dog walkers, and cleaners, showing her down-to-earth nature.
Steve also shared that Meghan taught him a valuable lesson during their time together: “Give respect to get respect.” Reflecting on her early days as a royal, he admitted that he “felt sorry for her” due to the intense scrutiny she faced, noting how difficult it was for her to adapt to life under the spotlight, reports The Mirror US.
“She was paranoid. We had people following us around everywhere we went,” Steve recalled, detailing the relentless media attention, with drones and vehicles tailing them. He described it as a “nightmare” and revealed that Meghan was denied the simple freedoms she had previously enjoyed.
One memorable moment Steve shared was when Meghan expressed a wish to shop at a grocery store like a regular person. “I pushed the cart around the grocery store, and she was putting stuff in it. She really enjoyed that,” he said, highlighting Meghan’s longing for a sense of normalcy amid the pressures of royal life.
Meghan has openly discussed the restrictions she felt as a member of the Royal Family. In her 2021 interview with CBS, she revealed, “I couldn’t call an Uber to the palace. You couldn’t just go.” She also mentioned that her personal belongings, like her passport and keys, were kept by Royal aides, adding to her feeling of being trapped.
Despite the accusations of bullying from Buckingham Palace staff, which Meghan has consistently denied, Steve described her as “warm and considerate,” based on his experience with her in Canada. He emphasized how many are surprised by “what a big heart she has,” and even though he no longer works for her, he expressed admiration for Meghan, saying he would happily work for her again, praising her as an excellent boss.
