Prince Harry Speaks Emotionally at Anti-Landmine Event: “Carrying On Her Legacy Is a Responsibility I Take Incredibly Seriously”

Prince Harry delivered an emotional and passionate speech at the Halo Trust’s anti-landmine event in New York, just days before his upcoming visit to the UK. The event drew a packed room, and the Duke of Sussex, known for his commitment to humanitarian causes, spoke with heartfelt sincerity about continuing the work his late mother, Princess Diana, began.

Reflecting on his mother’s legacy, Harry told the audience, “Carrying on her legacy is a responsibility that I take incredibly seriously.” His voice carried the weight of his dedication as he recalled Princess Diana’s courageous work to bring global attention to the dangers of landmines, particularly during her iconic walk through an active minefield in Angola in 1997. That moment helped spotlight the global issue of landmines and their devastating impact on communities in post-conflict zones.

The Halo Trust, the organization behind this event, gained international recognition after Princess Diana’s involvement. Harry’s connection to the cause is deeply personal, and he has continued to champion the charity’s mission for a mine-free world. “I think we all know how much she would want us to finish this particular job. We are all here because we are a band of true believers, fighting for a mine-free world,” Harry said, emphasizing the need for collective action to achieve this goal.

Harry highlighted the importance of Angola, where his mother had walked the minefield decades earlier, noting its young and vibrant population. “Africa, and Angola in particular, has an incredibly young population. A demographic wave that surges with energy and optimism, holding the promise of a bright future for Angola’s youth. For them, a world without mines must be a moral imperative for all of us,” he urged. His remarks underscored the importance of creating a safer future for younger generations, free from the lingering dangers of landmines.

The Duke of Sussex has been a long-time advocate for landmine clearance, having visited Angola himself in 2019 to witness firsthand the ongoing efforts to remove landmines. His emotional connection to the cause, stemming from his mother’s work, has been a central focus of his humanitarian efforts, especially in Africa, a continent that holds personal significance for Harry.

In addition to his speech at the Halo Trust event, Prince Harry is set to return to the UK later this month for another charity event. WellChild, a charity supporting seriously ill children and their families, announced that the Duke will be attending their annual awards ceremony. “We are delighted to announce that WellChild Patron Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex, will attend the 2024 WellChild Awards on 30th Sept. The Duke will meet our inspirational winners at a pre-ceremony reception before joining them in the main event,” the charity confirmed.

Prince Harry’s continued dedication to carrying forward his mother’s humanitarian legacy remains evident through his work with causes like Halo Trust and WellChild, underscoring his ongoing commitment to making a positive difference in the world, just as Princess Diana did before him.
